I had decided this Spring that I no longer wanted to raise Ameraucanas for large fowl. That decision was due to eye color problems, and I have started to get birds with poor beards, but mostly, it is due to the fact that the AOSB class where I am usually has NO competition. I like something more of a challenge for showing than just competing against myself. While Large fowl is not exactly popular here in Colorado, I have seen a great deal of interest in my Rhode Island Reds and people often wonder how I get them so red, as theirs (Hatchery stock) are not like that.
I bought Eggs from Mike Johnson, (House of Champions) on two different occasions, prior to his sell out of the large fowl. If you know Mike, you know he raises exceptional birds, and he shows all over the US. These birds are products from his stock and I will continue to raise the birds myself next year. After all, I am from Rhode Island so why should I not raise my own State Bird?
I currently have 9 hens, all single combed birds except for 1, and 2 cockerels, who are both Rose Combed.
The following are a few pictures of the birds from last year and the new ones from this year.
